Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
