Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
