The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Follows Poor Reception

The new appointee assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure informed staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a clearer game identity.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

The news mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the entire text from Ismailer's memo:

Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”

Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last autumn’s the game playtest was informative. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a sharper brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s ready to achieve its ambition to our audience.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Studio Head of 31st Union. Following a period of talks, he starts with us on next week.

Ben’s guidance and experience in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half creating and leading some of the most well-known series in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to continue witnessing the development of the game in the time to come.

Background of the New Leader

The appointee presently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in last year in conjunction with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description states. "Face the competition with new abilities, risks, and tests that evolve every round. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, put it on the line, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."

Project Ethos does not have an announced launch window or supported systems, but players can anticipate further news as development advances.
